You will apply Mechanical Engineering skills to assist in providing innovative, reliable and cost-effective solutions for our customers requiring the development of new or improved drilling products. You will have the challenge of designing a variety of mechanical components and/or mechatronic systems that will operate in the challenging environment of oil wells at temperatures up to 200 degC and pressures of 30,000 psi. and shocks (500 G's) - up to 30,000 ft from the rig, communicating with the surface through various methods. Within a multi-disciplinary team, you will collaborate with other experts (electrical engineers, software engineers, mechanical engineers, physicists, designers, etc.) to design the system. You will also perform technical planning for system integration, test and validation, authoring of functional specifications, and contribute to the development of new principles and concepts. Responsibilities Your responsibilities will include designing complex mechanical devices/assemblies, conducting both lab & field tests, analyzing test results & preparing technical reports. You will interface with the technical staff from other disciplines, our international customers, and field personnel from domestic and overseas Operations organizations. The tools used for the conceptualization, modeling and creation include Creo, ANSYS, and Simulink. S20ER: Solenoid design and testing - Stonehouse - 6 to 13 months Flexible duration Scope and Subject of the Opening There are many different variables that need to be considered when designing a solenoid - materials that are magnetic and have a low structural strength prone to corrosion. Solenoid system operate in harsh conditions that involve the tough downhole environment and has variety of moving parts. This is important as the moving parts should not be affected by downhole shock and vibrations. This is achieved by the spring preload. The main trade-off of this arrangement is a mass/dimensions of moving components vs required specification of the solenoid. Additionally, system may have parts that require production testing. This test system shall be designed and optimized to suit the requirements of the operation environment. Your project will look to refine the design of an existing system within the constraints that we have to improve the performance of the system. Also, you may require to design the test set-up for the system to ensure its performance, We would also like to look at opportunities for scaling the design to a different size. Responsibilities You will be working alongside Senior Mechanical and Electrical Engineers learning the variety of the subjects, for example: part design, magnetics, FEA modeling, material and coating selection, limits and fits etc. There will also be the opportunity to get involved with making and testing the design. Your responsibilities will be clearly defined however not limited to the scope of the internship (you can choose to be involved in other parts of the project or in general activities of the centre). C20JS: Mechanical Packaging of Electronics - Cambridge - 12 months duration Scope and Subject of the Opening You will be part of a research team that is working on the subject of drilling tool design, where we investigate novel ideas for new drilling tools, as well as improvements for existing tools. Working alongside a member of the research team, you will focus on the mechanical packaging of electronic boards. Knowledge in electronic circuit design will not be required as we look at the board merely as a mechanical element with its own dynamic properties (response to vibrations) and we will focus on improving the way these boards are attached inside the drilling tools. This will require creative thinking, as well as designing and conducting experiments (e.g. dynamic structural response of the electrics board) using accelerometers, strain gauges and data acquisition systems. Some hands-on practical experience in "building things", as well as some basic knowledge in signal processing would be desirable in order to analyse the results (e.g. Fourier analysis using Matlab or similar). We will also look at the manufacturing aspects of any new concepts to ensure the technology can be transferred to the field organization for immediate business impact. Responsibilities Review current PWA retention methods in SLB (optional) Run thermal expansion simulations using appropriate FEA package Design injection moulds with different shapes Experiment with injection moulding of potting compounds and develop a workable technique to achieve desired geometry. Run experiments to determine the dynamic and thermal performance of different potting geometries. Write a final report to document the results, as well as a final oral presentation Competencies Good level of understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals, such as solid mechanics, dynamics, and material properties. Hands-on practical skills in order to build and run experimental setups. Ideally also some exposure to an FEA package as well as solid modeling package. C20AM: Physics/Mechanical Engineering - Cambridge - 6 months duration Scope and Subject of the Opening You will work on the development of measurement systems and sensors aimed at the harsh measurement challenges in oilfield (for instance developing systems for pipe inspection or characterizing multiphase flows through production systems). We start from developing an understanding of the measurement physics through building and exploring simple model systems, before developing a series of increasingly robust prototypes aimed at the final application. There will be opportunities to use and learn various areas of physics, mechanical design, electronics and software. Responsibilities You will be integrated into the team and interact regularly with the team members. There will be an opportunity to learn and practice new techniques. C20DS: Rock Cutting Experimental Campaign - Cambridge - 3 to 13 months Flexible duration Scope and Subject of the Opening The rock cutting research facilities encompass a range of activities that you may contribute to. These include conducting experimental campaigns which could involve scape tests, laser scanning, data analysis and thermal imaging. Development of experimental methods frequently involves preparing designs for 3D printing and analysis of data using Matlab. In addition, hardware control systems may need modification or construction where Labview / Arduino programming may be required. Time for on-the-job training is provided. In addition to Peer reviews from the research staff at the centre, regular presentations from the business segments and external visitors provide a rich learning environment that interns are encouraged to participate in. Interns are frequently involved in technical report writing and oral presentation with coaching support. C20LS: Control Theory and Control Systems - Cambridge - 6 months duration Scope and Subject of the Opening You will work on the development and experimental verification of control, state and parameter estimation algorithms for oilfield production systems. The role will require implementation of control theory, in particular model predictive control (MPC), along with more practical coding using Python and LabVIEW to interface the algorithms with the real world. Responsibilities You will be integrated into the team and interact regularly with the team members. There will be an opportunity to learn and practice new techniques. The focus of your tasks will be: development of prototype control and estimation algorithms (Python/MATLAB/LabView) operating and acquiring data from large experimental fluid systems analysis of algorithm performance both in simulation and experimentally.
